And you just hope the cereal's where it's supposed (go back »)

The most annoying thing about a new town is not how different it is. It’s not how much it’s just like where you just left – what you just ran from. The most annoying thing about a new town or place or whatever, is that things are so different and so the same at the same time. Most places have a Safeway, for example, but the cereal is always on the wrong side of the aisle.

You notice these things when you’re running. Especially if you don’t know what you’re running from, because then you just keep running and never say to yourself “Oh, it’s ok here. I can stay.” You just stay for a little while, and then you leave. You find somewhere new. All you want is to go home just so the cereal is on the right side of the aisle. But you can’t, because you’re running, and you don’t even know why you’re running. You don’t even know why you can’t go home. Or maybe you’ve run so much and so long you can’t remember where the cereal is supposed to be, just that it’s wrong. It’s those little things that make the whole town feel wrong. And then everything feels wrong, and then you leave. Then you find a new town. And that town has a different Safeway. And you just hope that the cereal’s where it’s supposed to be.
